Full course description

Dates: July 17 - September 25, 2023

This Introduction to Construction Management Certificate is geared to those who are looking to advance their knowledge and understanding of the basic elements and skill sets required by a Professional Construction Manager. The course is a primer for those with degrees in Engineering, Architecture and other fields of study, who wish to gain a better understanding of the topical content of a degree specific to Construction Management and to help prepare them for additional studies or matriculations into advanced degrees in this area of study. The certificate will also benefit those currently working in construction as a craftsperson and want to learn skills necessary to move into the management side. Finally, it will also provide an opportunity for those currently working in a construction office without specific training or degrees, the option to further refine their skill sets related to Professional Construction Management.

The Introduction to Construction Management Certificate is envisioned to be a combination of material and textbook readings, short videos, quizzes, discussions and assignments delivered in an asynchronous online environment.

Entering competencies should be:

  1. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.

  2. Ability to perform basic math functions and geometric calculations.

  3. Understanding of/exposure to the Construction Industry.

  4. Ability to create written communications.

  5. Ability to analyze new concepts.

Students will be expected to complete weekly assigned textbook readings, online quizzes, and complete subcategory certificates. They will also be expected to participate in weekly discussion forums and to contribute to the class’s understanding of topical materials. Completion of assigned projects related to the materials presented will also be required.

The primary course resource will be the textbook:

Jackson, PhD., DBIA, Barbara J, Construction Management Jump Start – The Best FirstStep Toward a Career in Construction Management, 3rd Edition, Wiley, 2020  ISBN: 978-1119451013

This textbook walks the reader through the construction management process—explaining how to take a project from a set of two-dimensional drawings to a three-dimensional wood, steel, or concrete building, bridge, or highway. Along the way, students are expected to learn about the seven functions of construction management and how they contributes to the successful delivery of the construction project.

Students will need to purchase the textbook prior to the course starting.
